About Barrett Township
Overview
Barrett Township is a 'second class' township located in the northern region of Pennsylvania's Monroe County. It's nestled right in the region where the Pocono Mountains reside, a region that's thriving with perhaps the most populated tourist friendly vacation stop in the northern Pennsylvania area.
The township is home to five villages known as Mountainhome, Cresco, Buck Hill Falls, Skytop and Canadensis. Each village actually represents the original settlement areas found within the Township. Two of these villages, Skytop and Buck Hill Falls, are resort communities of Poconos. Cresco, Canadensis and Mountainhome are considered the largest villages in the township.
Barrett Township measures over 53.2 square miles, mostly land with some water in the surrounding area. The surrounding area contains many dense forests and clean streams; this led to early settlements taking advantage of the resources around them, which helped sustain many industries developing throughout the area.
Lumbering, tanning and other early industrial industries flourished in the region at the time.
Barrett Township Today
Today, Barrett Township is home to over 4,000 residents. Being so close to the Pocono Mountains, it hosts many popular tourist destinations and resorts, contributing to the relatively thriving commercial and business community there.
Barrett's location in Monroe County is close enough to the much more populous Pocono Mountains area, affording residents more convenience than before.
Despite that, the township is relatively small and cozy enough for individuals to retire and families to live there. The Pocono real estate scene may be modestly priced enough for families to relocate into one of the many Pocono homes located within the township.
History
Barrett Township was first established in 1859 from portions of the nearby Paradise Township and Price Township. In fact, both townships border Barrett Township—Paradise from the south and Price from the southeast. The origins of its name stem from a resident known as George Rodden Barrett, a Clearfield County lawyer who became a judge.
Early settlers from across Pennsylvania started arriving in Barrett Township as early as the mid 1700s. One of the more notable group of settlers were the Price family, who came from Bucks County in Pennsylvania to Barrett in 1756. Although they did leave the area due to hostile relations related to the Walking Purchase, they returned a few years later to eventually raise their large family.
By 1856, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad made their only stop in Barrett's Cresco. Thanks to this, businesses took advantage of the rail line, which had the positive effect of boosting the resort industry in the area.
This encouraged many visitors from the East Coast and beyond to visit Barrett Township's incredible surroundings and to breathe in its fresh mountain air. Early resort settlements often accommodated visitors with picnicking and fishing during the summer, in additional to winter sports like skiing and tobogganing.
