Mount Pocono Borough Today

Mount Pocono Borough is known as a relatively rural community that eventually became an entire commercial hub for the 'rapidly growing municipalities within the northwestern portion of Monroe County.' Although the area used to be heavily forested, the growing economy and emergence in the recreational industry fostered its transformation into a 'second home and recreation mecca.'

New and prospective Mount Pocono Borough residents won't have too many difficulties finding Pocono homes in this region. Thanks to the development of many industries in the region, the Mount Pocono Borough's region morphed into one capable of supporting residential lots, where Pocono real estate housing units and other dwellings serve the growing population.

History

The establishment of Mount Pocono Borough actually took place much later than other surrounding boroughs, making it one of the 'youngest' in Monroe County. The Borough of Mount Pocono was first incorporated in July 1927, after the area from the southeastern corner of Coolbaugh Township was deemed to comprise the entirety of the borough.

The origins of its name trace back to the increasing importance of the tourism industry in the area, in addition to the area's relatively high elevation—hence, the name Mount Pocono. The name Pocono is derived from the Native American term pocohanne, meaning 'a stream between mountains.'

The area encompassing Mount Pocono Borough was actually settled long before its incorporation. In the mid 1800s, the first settler – a man named Oliver Smith – opened a tavern in the area. As soon as more settlers began moving into the area, it soon took on the name Mount Pleasant. Settlers and early tourists established the name out of their appreciation for the area's beautiful natural surroundings and clean air and water.

By 1864, Mount Pocono Borough took on another name – Forks Station or Forks – which referred to the major roads that had started intercepting through the village at the time. These roads now form the modern day five-point intersection there today.
